ADHD and Video Games: What Gamers and Their Loves Ones Need to Know
Description
Video games are now the most popular pastime, not just in the United States of America, but all over the world. This isn’t a coincidence. Video games today are nothing like the ones that members of Gen X and Baby Boomers grew up with. It’s like comparing a horse and wagon on the Oregon Trail to the next-generation Virgin Galactic spacecraft. Thanks to technological advances since the 1970s, video games today are far bigger, better-looking, longer, more complex, and more addictive than ever before. In this presentation, I will discuss how video games and other products are made more addictive. Specifically, I will discuss features like the Game Play Loop and Dark Patterns, systems designed into many products and services by their creators to increase addictive behavior in users. I will discuss how these designs are significantly more dangerous and addictive to individuals with ADHD. I will discuss the symptoms of video game addiction, ways to reduce risk, and ways to manage video game use. I will also discuss trends such as mobile gaming, downloadable content (DLCs), Non-fungible tokens (NFTs), AI, and other developments that impact games, users, and society in general.
