Name
The ADHD Sensory Experience: Overstimulation, Touch, and Intimate Relationships
Description
Adults with ADHD frequently report challenges in romantic and sexual relationships that extend beyond communication difficulties or relationship satisfaction alone. Increasing research suggests that sensory processing differences, interoceptive awareness, and emotional regulation may significantly influence how individuals with ADHD experience physical closeness, touch, and intimacy.
This session examines how sensory sensitivity, sensory seeking, and sensory overload can shape intimate and romantic relationships for adults with ADHD. Participants will explore how differences in sensory processing may affect experiences of touch, environmental stimulation, and awareness of bodily cues such as comfort, desire, and arousal. These sensory dynamics can contribute to misunderstandings within relationships, including perceived rejection, avoidance of physical closeness, or difficulty maintaining intimate connection.
Drawing on current research in ADHD, sensory processing, and interoception, this presentation will introduce a framework for understanding how sensory experiences intersect with attention regulation, emotional reactivity, and relationship functioning. Practical strategies will be shared to help adults with ADHD, their partners, and professionals recognize sensory barriers to intimacy and develop supportive approaches for improving comfort, communication, and connection.
Attendees will leave with an expanded understanding of sensory processing in ADHD and practical tools that can be applied in clinical practice, coaching, and everyday relationship contexts.
