ADHD Motivation: Aha, Now I get it! This makes sense
Description
This presentation examines how executive function impairments impact motivation and how they can be accommodated.
Dr. Russell Barkley describes the brain as a two-level system: the automatic brain and the executive brain. The executive brain must effortfully override automatic impulses. Extending this framework, we introduce a new theory of motivation as a two-force system. The automatic brain is motivated by immediate emotional urges, seeking pleasure, avoiding discomfort, and conserving effort. The executive brain is motivated by achievement and long-term outcomes, requiring tolerance of discomfort. At any given moment, one system dominates.
This lens reframes ADHD motivation, explaining why behavioral observations often misjudge it. It clarifies willpower, rewards, and accommodations, revealing how motivation can be engineered through adaptive supports. The result is a more accurate, practical understanding of ADHD and how to systematically relieve the impairment.
