Name
Still Distracted After All These Years: ADHD in Older Adults
Description
This session will focus on the much-neglected area of older adults with ADHD. Although it has long been recognized that ADHD is a lifespan condition, very little attention has been paid to the issues faced by older adults with ADHD. Physicians that prescribe medication to treat ADHD often feel reluctant to prescribe stimulants for older adults, and there are no real guidelines to help clinicians distinguish between age-related cognitive decline and never-diagnosed ADHD in an older adult. The risks for older adults are real and those few older adults that have succeeded in obtaining appropriate diagnosis and treatment report significant benefit. This presentation will introduce the presentation of ADHD in older adults as well as the primary issues that need to be addressed in ADHD-focused psychotherapy for older adults.
