Why Smart Students Don’t Start: Solving Task Initiation, Avoidance, and Follow-Through in ADHD
Description
Students with ADHD often understand their assignments—but still can’t seem to start. They procrastinate, avoid, or shut down, leaving parents and educators frustrated and unsure how to help. This session focuses on one of the most persistent and misunderstood challenges in ADHD: task initiation and follow-through. Participants will learn why starting is so difficult for students with ADHD and how traditional approaches—like reminders, planners, or increased consequences—often fall short. Instead, this session introduces a practical framework for helping students move from avoidance to action by targeting the exact moments where they get stuck. Attendees will walk away with strategies to: • Reduce task paralysis and overwhelm • Help students start work more quickly and consistently • Support sustained effort without constant supervision • Increase follow-through while reducing conflict Through real-life examples, coaching scripts, and guided application, this session provides tools that can be used immediately at home or in the classroom to help students take meaningful action.
