Name
Collective Theorizing on ADHD – A Grassroots Philosophical Workshop
Description
What does it mean to have ADHD? When answering this question, ADHDers are in a bind. We exist on the front lines in a cultural landscape that often holds an oversimplified view of mental disorder: if an issue isn’t explicitly medical, it’s a personal failure. To defend the legitimacy of our experiences and reduce unwarranted blame, we’re driven to pigeonhole ADHD as a concrete biological entity – “the ADHD Brain”. However, psychological categories don’t always map neatly onto biology. There are clear social, ethical, pragmatic, and political forces shaping our conception of ADHD in addition to biological insights. So, how can we recognize this complicated picture without undermining our ongoing struggle for legitimacy? In this workshop, I’ll introduce a framework from the philosophy of science that illuminates often ignored dimensions of ADHD, including the role ADHDers play in shaping its meaning. Together we’ll cultivate a space for thoughtful reflection rooted in our own conceptualizations of ADHD. Learning from each other, we’ll discuss accuracy and misinformation, share critiques, and explore changes we'd like to see as the concept continues evolving. Everyone is welcome to come together and collectively theorize toward the future of ADHD.
