Name
Tapping into Student Identity to Create a Successful College Experience
Description
College students with ADHD/EF seek coaching for support and strategies to be successful in the higher education environment. When students transition to higher education, they bring lived experiences that are often pre-empted by a focus on their disability vs. their whole selves. While accommodations can be essential, focusing solely on the diagnosis can unintentionally narrow the lens necessary for holistic student support. Acknowledging student identity is an integral part of an equity approach, encompassing more than the student’s disability. ADHD coaches are uniquely positioned to use coaching skills to build a trusting relationship with students, helping them explore and embrace the layers of their identity while developing strategies for success. In this presentation, attendees will learn how to confidently use coaching skills to understand the multiple identities of each student - culture/ethnicity, gender, ability, class, religion - to increase the likelihood that they will engage in a meaningful and helpful coaching partnership to address their challenges as emerging adults.
