Fuel Your Flow: Igniting and Sustaining Effort on Important Tasks
Description
Task initiation and sustained attention are some of the most challenging aspects of living and working with ADHD. This session reviews research on task initiation, emotional dysregulation as an obstacle to engagement, and environmental factors that either help or hinder our ability to begin and stick with meaningful work. The session highlights understanding what energizes the ADHD brain—recognizing the internal and external cues that help us start and keep going on important tasks, even when motivation is low. Participants will look at current research on arousal, reward processing, and self-determination to find and develop the internal fuel needed for action—rather than waiting for motivation to come. Attendees will explore tools from the Fuel Your Flow framework to assess energy levels and emotional readiness before tackling demanding tasks, encouraging a strategic and compassionate approach to planning and scheduling. Practical techniques for activating the brain’s engagement systems, building momentum, and staying focused through completing tasks will be discussed, including environmental changes, body-based regulation, and personalized routines. Whether you are a clinician, coach, educator, or individual with ADHD, you will leave with practical strategies to maintain focus before, during, and after important tasks.
