Name
Adapting DBT for ADHD Adolescents: Skills That Stick
Description
Standard DBT skills don’t always “stick” for adolescents with ADHD—and many clinicians see this gap in real time. Executive functioning challenges, cognitive load, and attentional variability can make traditional DBT feel inaccessible, leading to disengagement, inconsistent skill use, or shutdown. This session offers a practical, clinically grounded framework for adapting DBT to better align with ADHD neurodevelopment. Attendees will learn how to modify core DBT skills—such as Wise Mind, TIPP, Opposite Action, and distress tolerance—to reduce overwhelm, increase engagement, and improve real-world application. Through case-based examples and experiential strategies, this session emphasizes how to make DBT more usable in the moment for ADHD adolescents. Participants will leave with concrete, developmentally appropriate tools that can be immediately integrated into sessions to support emotional regulation, reduce avoidance, and increase follow-through.
