Matt Cohen is founder of the law firm, Matt Cohen and Associates, and is well known for his work in special education law. He has helped write several amendments to federal and state law. Matt lectures frequently on special education around the U.S.
Matt served as President and Board Member of Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders (CHADD) from 1999-2000. During that time, Matt was one of the leaders in the effort to add AD/HD as a disability to the IDEA regulations. He currently serves on the Public Policy Committee. He was a founding board member of the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA), the national special education advocacy organization, and continues to serve on the Board.
In 2009, Matt authored the book A Guide to Special Education Advocacy: What Parents, Clinicians and Advocates Need to Know and has also authored many magazines articles. He has been recognized as an Illinois Super Lawyer from 2005 thru 2025 and has received many other awards and honors.
Matt received his J.D. from the University of Minnesota (1981) and his B.A. from Grinnell College (1977).
