Name
Poster Session | Exploring the Link Between ADHD Traits & Abusive Relationships
Description
Romantic relationships can be especially challenging for individuals with ADHD due to traits like inattention, forgetfulness, and impulsivity. These characteristics can unintentionally increase emotional vulnerability and make it harder to recognize or respond to abuse. This poster highlights how these core ADHD symptoms may contribute to a cycle that prevents individuals from setting boundaries, seeing harmful patterns clearly, or leaving unhealthy situations.
For example, inattention can lead to being manipulated during conflict; forgetfulness may dull the memory of past harm, leading to premature forgiveness; and impulsivity can cause sudden decisions to leave—followed by self-doubt and guilt.
To explore these patterns, an anonymous online survey is being distributed through safety-focused communities and local support networks, aimed at individuals diagnosed with ADHD or who identify with its traits. The responses collected offer insight into how these symptoms intersect with the experience of emotional abuse in relationships.
The poster will present the findings visually and offer space for attendees to reflect, ask questions, and engage with the topic. This session is designed to raise awareness, validate lived experiences, and spark conversations around the emotional complexity of ADHD in relationships.
