Laugh, Listen, Love: Using Improv to Strengthen ADHD Relationships
Description
ADHD can create unique communication challenges in relationships, from impulsive interruptions to emotional reactivity and misunderstandings. For many people, traditional skills don’t often work. As clinicians, we need to step out of the box and explore alternatives to traditional talk therapy, coaching and education. In my work, that has led me to explore improv.
What if the very skills that make improv work—listening, adapting, and saying “Yes, And”—could also help ADHD couples connect more deeply?
In this engaging and interactive session, we’ll explore five improv principles that help transform communication patterns in ADHD relationships. Through playful, hands-on exercises, participants will learn how to reduce defensiveness, build emotional flexibility, and improve active listening—all while having fun. Participants will practice skills like pausing before responding, shifting from blame to collaboration, and using humor to defuse tension.
Therapists, coaches, and participants will walk away with improv-based techniques they can integrate into work with ADHD clients right away. No prior improv experience is needed—just a willingness to listen, laugh, and learn!
