Name
Pre-Conference Workshop | Embracing Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Along your ADHD Journey
Description
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a process-based therapy that helps people build psychological flexibility by learning how to handle difficult thoughts and feelings while staying focused on what matters most to them. This workshop introduces participants to the six core components of ACT: acceptance, cognitive defusion, present-moment awareness, self-as-context, values clarification, and committed action. The workshop will start with a simple explanation of the ACT model, including how it is based on understanding the way language and thoughts influence behavior. Participants will practice techniques to accept uncomfortable emotions instead of struggling against them, and they will learn ways to distance themselves from negative thoughts using cognitive defusion. Mindfulness exercises will help participants become more present and engaged in the moment. The concept of self-as-context will be introduced to show how people can observe their thoughts and feelings without becoming overwhelmed by them. Values clarification activities will encourage participants to identify what is most important to them. Finally, they will explore how to take meaningful actions guided by their values. By the end of the workshop, attendees will have a better understanding of ACT and the benefits for those of us facing challenges related to ADHD.
